- Review your academic record
- Conduct a thorough interview with you and your parent(s)
- Arrange for you to take and interpret for you the results of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory/Review surveys
- Prepare your list of activities, honors and accomplishments
- Prepare a list of reach, target and likely colleges that are uniquely suited to your interests, strengths and goals
- Advise you on how to get the most from college visits and interviews
- Help keep you on track to meet deadlines and requirements for the various college applications
- Brainstorm essay topics and review your final essays
- Review your applications before submission
- Provide guidance concerning your letters of recommendation
- Help you review your acceptance letters and make your final decision

In return, and with your family's help, you should be prepared to:
- Communicate openly with capital educational planners and bring up any questions that arise during the process
- Provide a full academic history, including transcripts, standardized test results and psychological testing results, if applicable
- Provide all information, including essays and other application materials, at or before agreed-upon deadlines
- Schedule and follow through with your college visits
- Follow all requirements, recommendations and deadlines of your high school guidance department
- Send official standardized test scores (SAT, ACT) to the colleges to which you apply
- Request letters of recommendation from teachers and others, if required
- Keep track of your applications and acceptances and notify the colleges of your enrollment decision
